Brace Yourself — Does my child need braces? The non-scary truth

The importance of early detection and care when it comes to the health of your teeth is paramount to great oral wellbeing. The team at James Karpac Orthodontics in Dublin OH has a wealth of knowledge and years of experience to give your family the care they need. We have a great reputation with children and the truth is that it doesn’t need to be a daunting experience where braces are concerned. Both parent and child can feel confident with the expertise of the orthodontic care taken in both of our clinics located in Columbus OH.

A good start is to be informed and know what you are looking for. When thinking about braces as an option for your child you can look at the following early symptoms to quickly determine whether a consultation is needed. The below can often be a good indication that braces may be the best choice for a little one in your family.

  • Crowding

Crowding is a common early sign that can be seen easily. When there isn’t enough space in the mouth for all the teeth, crooked teeth will form and the issue can become worse as the child gets older. Severe crowding can make it almost impossible to clean your teeth properly which can result in plaque build-up, bad breath and gum disease. Losing bone around the teeth can also occur and be a painful experience.

  • Crossbite

A crossbite is abnormal and occurs when your upper tooth sits behind the lower opposing tooth. This type of bite can affect the growth of the jaw and fracture or cause unnecessary wear on the teeth involved.

  • Overbite

An overbite can have various forms of severity and usually becomes noticeable when the top teeth stick out further than the bottom. When teeth protrude or are not sitting correctly in the mouth the risk of a more serious injury can occur with every day bumps or accidents.

  • Openbite

Speech problems like a lisp can occur from an open bite and are easy to detect as there is usually a gap where the front teeth won’t touch. This can also cause difficulty biting down. A lisp is usually the most common sign that parents will notice if gaps are small so always consult the orthodontist for a thorough examination.

  • Underbite

Underbites can cause difficulty chewing as well as biting and also increase the chance of an imbalanced appearance in the face. An underbite can be noticed from the upper front teeth ending up behind the lower ones. It can be associated with the jaw being disproportionate in size.
