Busting 5 Common Myths About Metal Braces

There are many misconceptions about metal braces that you should know about!

metal braces are a popular orthodontic treatment option at JK Orthodontics

It’s an unfortunate part of the orthodontic industry, but there are many myths circulating throughout the Internet when it comes to traditional metal braces. Although the JK Orthodontics team is always there for you or your child with our Line-M-Up™ invisible aligner alternative, it’s still safe to say that braces are a great option when you’re trying to develop a healthy, aesthetically-pleasing smile with perfectly straight teeth.

We want all of our patients to feel as comfortable as possible when it comes to all of our treatment options, and this includes braces. Dr. Karpac will always help you when it comes to deciding if braces are a good fit for you or your child, and below we’ll be going over some of the common myths oriented around braces that need to be busted once and for all!

Myth #1: Braces treatment takes several years to complete

This is by far one of the most common misconceptions oriented around conventional braces, and it’s a big reason why a lot of people think that this type of orthodontic treatment isn’t even worth their time. But this couldn’t be further from the truth!

The overall length of any individual’s treatment process will depend upon many different unique factors, including the patient’s age and the misalignment’s overall severity.

There are some patients that only require braces for 6 months or a year, but most treatment periods will be around 1-3 years in length.

Myth #2: Braces cause a lot of pain

Just like the vast majority of other dental and orthodontic services, braces can potentially cause soreness for the first few days as your treatment begins. This type of manageable discomfort is perfectly normal to experience, mainly because you’ve just had many wires, brackets and rubber bands placed into your mouth!

So it’s true that braces will initiate some discomfort at the very beginning stages and sometimes after adjustment appointments; however, it’s important to know that everyone will feel perfectly fine once they’ve become acclimated to their braces (which only takes a couple of days).

Myth #3: Braces are only for children and teenagers

This is blatantly a myth, because braces and all orthodontic treatment options are perfectly fine for adults. There really is no age limit when it comes to getting the orthodontic care you need!

What’s actually happening throughout the orthodontic industry is that more and more adults are choosing to get braces and Line-M-Up™, and they’re loving the results of their treatment!

Myth #4: You shouldn’t play musical instruments or sports while wearing braces

Although it’s true that you may need to make some adjustments oriented around the feeling of having braces for these activities, you can certainly play sports and any mouthpiece instrument that you’d like while undergoing orthodontic treatment.

What’s important for braces patients and parents to keep in mind is that it is recommended that athletes wear a mouth guard while practicing or playing in competitive games.

Myth #5: Once your braces treatment is over, your teeth will be always be straight forever

It’s certainly possible for braces patients to have perfect smiles for the rest of their lives after they complete their treatment process, but you’ll need to be diligent about wearing your retainers for at least a few years after your treatment ends.

Without the regular use of your retainers, it’s likely that your teeth will slowly but surely shift back to their previous positioning. That’s why we can’t stress enough how important it is to wear your retainers after you’re done with your braces treatment!
