What You Can Expect From Your Child’s First Orthodontist Appointment

Every 7-year-old should have their initial consultation with Dr. Karpac to prepare for future orthodontic treatments!

pediatric orthodontic treatment helps many children with a whole array of health benefits

Orthodontic issues will always progress if they’re left untreated, which is why so many parents want to address their children’s oral health issues as soon as possible. By the time a child is around seven years old, they’ll have developed their permanent teeth enough to bring them in for their initial consultation with Dr. Karpac and the JK Orthodontics staff.

This is the perfect time for a child’s first orthodontist appointment because we’ll be able to determine potential issues with their teeth or jaw alignment that will eventually get worse in the coming years ahead. But this in lies the beauty of early initial consultations, because Dr. Karpac will be increasingly more capable of supporting a 7-year-old’s teeth and jawline development even before they’re ready for conventional orthodontic treatments.

Below is an overview detailing what parents and patients can expect from a child’s first orthodontist appointment!

What Should I Expect When My Child’s Ready For Their First Orthodontic Evaluation at JK Orthodontics?

When you and your child arrive at either one of our Dublin or Gahanna offices, you’ll first fill out a new patient form. This form will include important details like your insurance information, as well as your child’s dental/medical history. Thoroughly filling out these forms is very important because it’ll help our staff ensure that your child is obtaining personalized care that coincides with their unique needs.

Dr. Karpac will then take a thorough look at your child’s teeth and jaws, and this will be when we take notes oriented around important factors like teeth spacing, teeth positioning and jaw alignment.

After Dr. Karpac has finished looking at your child’s mouth in-person, we’ll then take a good look at what’s going on below the gumline surface via x-ray imaging and 3D scanning. These x-rays and 3D scans will go a very long way to help us determine what type of treatment plans should be enacted, and if your child is ready to begin treatment or should wait a little longer.

When it is decided that your child is ready for treatment, our staff will then make dental impressions of your child’s bite. These impressions are crucial in helping us develop the initial stages of the customized treatment plan.

And at this point, Dr. Karpac will go over all the details of his examination with you and your child, and also provide his opinion about what your best treatment options are. Some of these options will include braces or Line-M-Up™ invisible aligners.

Questions Your Child’s Initial Consultation Will Answer

One of the most important purposes of orthodontic consultation appointments is to answer parent and patient questions, and we’ll be sure to answer the following during your child’s first appointment:

  • Does your child currently have orthodontic problems that need to be addressed?

  • Will your child require orthodontic treatment?

  • What are the best treatment options for your child?

  • How long will the orthodontic treatment process likely take?
